There are hundreds of things that go into planning a great event.

The venue.

The food.

The music.

The decorations.

The flowers.

The speeches.

The invitations.

The seating plan.

The little details that nobody else even notices.

But here's an interesting question.

When everyone has gone home, what will your guests actually remember?

Will they remember exactly what they ate?

Will they remember the colour of the napkins?

Will they remember what time the speeches started?

Possibly.

But give somebody a moment of genuine astonishment, laughter and shared excitement and there's a very good chance they'll remember that for years.

That's where live magic comes in.

I'm Paul Roberts, a professional magician with more than 30 years of experience performing at weddings, parties, private celebrations, corporate events and all kinds of occasions throughout the UK.

And I've discovered something during those three decades.

People don't really book a magician because they want to watch somebody do tricks.

They book a magician because they want their guests to experience something.

Something unexpected.

Something funny.

Something impossible.

Something they'll talk about on the way home.

And, sometimes, something they'll still be talking about years later.

 Why Do People Remember Magic?

More magical moments from a corporate event at Carden Park Hotel

Think about the last time you saw something genuinely impossible.

Not something on television.

Not something on your phone.

Something that happened right in front of you.

Perhaps a card vanished from someone's hand.

Perhaps somebody appeared to know exactly what another person was thinking.

Perhaps an ordinary object disappeared and reappeared somewhere it absolutely shouldn't have been.

Your first reaction probably wasn't:

"That was an excellent piece of entertainment."

It was more likely:

"HOW DID YOU DO THAT?"

That's the wonderful thing about live magic.

It creates a shared experience.

People look at each other.

They laugh.

They argue about what they saw.

They try to work it out.

They ask the magician to do it again.

And suddenly complete strangers can be having a conversation.

That's particularly powerful at events where not everyone knows each other.

A magician doesn't simply entertain a group.

A magician can give that group something to experience together.

And shared experiences are what memories are made of.

What Kind of Events Can a Professional Magician Perform At?

Wrexham Magician Paul Roberts, is ready to amaze at your next Celebration.

This is probably one of the most common questions I get.

The short answer?

Almost any event where people get together can be made more memorable with magic.

I've performed at and entertained guests at all sorts of occasions, including:

  • Weddings
  • Wedding receptions
  • Birthday parties
  • Anniversary celebrations
  • Engagement parties
  • House parties
  • Dinner parties
  • Family celebrations
  • Christenings
  • Retirement parties
  • Christmas parties
  • Corporate events
  • Corporate dinners
  • Conferences
  • Networking events
  • Awards ceremonies
  • Gala dinners
  • Trade shows
  • Exhibitions
  • Product launches
  • Charity events
  • Fundraising events
  • Private functions
  • Hotel events
  • Festivals
  • Community events
  • VIP events
  • Special celebrations

And if your event isn't on that list?

Don't worry.

Some of the most interesting bookings are the ones that don't fit neatly into a category.

Wedding Magic

Wrexham weddings are a speciality for Paul Roberts Magician.

A wedding is already an incredibly special occasion.

But there are moments during a wedding when entertainment can make a particularly big difference.

Guests might be waiting for the newly married couple to arrive.

There may be a gap between the ceremony and wedding breakfast.

Photographs may be taking place.

The wedding breakfast might be finished but the evening entertainment hasn't started.

Or perhaps you've simply got 100 people who don't all know each other standing around with a drink in their hand.

These are perfect opportunities for close-up wedding magic.

I can move naturally around the room, performing for small groups and creating individual moments of astonishment.

The beauty of close-up magic at a wedding is that it doesn't need to interrupt the day.

It becomes part of it.

One group sees something impossible.

Then another group.

Then someone tells their friends.

Then those friends want to see something.

Before long, the magic has become part of the conversation.

And that is exactly what good wedding entertainment should do.

It should add to the atmosphere rather than take people away from it.

Birthday Parties & Private Celebrations

Wrexham Party Magician doing what he does best.

Whether you're turning 18, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 or simply celebrating because you feel like it, a magician can add something completely different to a birthday party.

Birthday parties are particularly good for interactive magic because the guests are already there to have fun.

Perhaps you're hosting a large celebration at a hotel.

Maybe it's a private function room.

Maybe you've hired a venue.

Or perhaps you're having everyone round your house.

The surroundings don't have to be spectacular.

The magic happens between the people.

And that's what makes it personal.

A birthday magician can move from group to group, performing close-up magic, getting people involved and creating those little moments that suddenly become stories.

"Do you remember what happened with the ring?"

"How did he know what card I picked?"

"There's no way that was in my pocket!"

Those are the moments I want your guests to remember.

House Parties & Dinner Parties

House party magic by Paul Roberts.

Can you hire a magician for a house party?

Absolutely.

In fact, a house party can be one of the most enjoyable environments for close-up magic.

You don't need a stage.

You don't need theatrical lighting.

You don't need a huge production team.

Your living room can become the venue.

Your dining room can become the stage.

Your garden can become the setting.

And because close-up magic happens just inches away from the audience, it can feel incredibly personal.

I'll mingle with your guests, joining groups naturally and performing interactive magic that fits the atmosphere of your party.

It can work particularly well for:

Dinner parties.

Anniversary celebrations.

Christmas gatherings.

Family parties.

Engagement celebrations.

Milestone birthdays.

Or simply:

"We've got everyone coming round and we want to do something different."

Sometimes that's all the reason you need.

Corporate Events & Business Entertainment

Paul Roberts proving why he is the ultimate Corporate entertainer

Corporate entertainment has changed.

People don't necessarily want another generic activity that everyone politely watches for 20 minutes.

They want something engaging.

Something different.

Something that gets people talking.

That's where professional corporate magic can be incredibly effective.

I've performed at corporate events, conferences, dinners, exhibitions and trade shows, creating experiences designed around the event and the people attending it.

Corporate magic can be used for:

  • Conferences
  • Networking events
  • Corporate dinners
  • Christmas parties
  • Awards ceremonies
  • Client entertainment
  • Product launches
  • Hospitality events
  • Team celebrations
  • Trade shows
  • Exhibitions
  • Business networking

At a networking event, magic can provide an instant conversation starter.

At a corporate dinner, it can entertain guests between courses.

At a Christmas party, it can give colleagues something completely different to enjoy.

At a trade show, interactive magic can help attract attention and encourage people to stop and engage.

And when clients or potential customers are involved, creating a memorable experience can be particularly valuable.

I've had the privilege of performing for organisations and clients including Rolls-Royce, Ernst & Young and Manchester United, alongside countless private businesses and organisations throughout the UK.

Christmas Parties, Awards Nights & Gala Events

Some events have a natural sense of occasion.

Christmas parties.

Awards evenings.

Gala dinners.

Charity balls.

Formal celebrations.

These events can be fantastic fun, but there can also be gaps in the evening where guests are eating, drinking, chatting or waiting for the next part of the programme.

That's where a magician can quietly transform the atmosphere.

Instead of entertainment being something everyone has to stop and watch, close-up magic can move around the room.

Small groups get their own experience.

People can join in.

And because the performance is happening directly in front of them, it feels spontaneous.

Trade Shows, Exhibitions & Networking Eve

Trade show Magician Paul Roberts, increasing footfall at the NEC, Birmingham.

Getting somebody to notice your stand at a busy exhibition isn't always easy.

There might be dozens — or hundreds — of other companies competing for attention.

A professional trade show magician can provide something different.

Magic attracts attention because people naturally want to know:

"What's happening over there?"

Once someone stops, a conversation can begin.

The magic becomes the icebreaker.

The salesperson can then do what they do best.

I've also used magic in corporate environments to help create conversations between people who might otherwise never have spoken.

And sometimes that's the most useful thing entertainment can do.

It gets people talking.

What Does a Magician Actually Do at an Event?

Top corporate Magician Paul Roberts, busy entertaining at Old Trafford.

This is another question worth answering because the phrase "hire a magician" can mean very different things.

I don't simply stand at the front of the room performing the same tricks from start to finish.

Depending on your event, I can provide:

Close-up magic

Interactive sleight-of-hand performed directly in front of small groups.

Table magic

Magic performed around tables during meals or between courses.

Drinks reception entertainment

Perfect for weddings, corporate events and parties when guests are mingling.

Stand-up comedy magic

A more structured performance for a larger group.

Mind-reading and mentalism

Interactive demonstrations involving thoughts, decisions and predictions.

Personalised magic

Where appropriate, routines can be adapted around a person, occasion or business.

The important thing is that the entertainment should fit the event.

Not the other way around.

Can a Magician Really Bring Guests Together?

Wedding at Crewe Hall with Paul Roberts.

Yes.

And this is one of the reasons I love performing at events.

Imagine a room where half the guests know each other and half don't.

People are standing around.

Someone is checking their phone.

Someone else is wondering who they're supposed to talk to.

Then a magician walks over.

A small group gathers.

Something impossible happens.

Everyone laughs.

Someone says:

"You've got to see this."

Another person joins.

And suddenly a conversation has started.

Magic gives people a reason to interact.

It removes the awkward first few seconds.

And because everyone has witnessed the same impossible moment, they instantly have something in common.

That's particularly useful at:

  • Weddings
  • Corporate networking events
  • Conferences
  • Christmas parties
  • Business functions
  • Large private celebrations

Is Close-Up Magic Better Than a Stage Show?

Paul Roberts Magic having fun bewildering guests in a Marquee in Cheshire
Stage Magician Paul Roberts, Levitates a table

Not necessarily.

They're simply different.

Close-up magic is intimate.

It happens directly in front of people and is ideal for mingling, receptions, dinners and parties.

Stand-up or stage magic is designed to bring a larger group together for a shared performance.

The right choice depends on your venue, guest numbers, timetable and what you want your guests to experience.

And sometimes the best answer is a combination.

For example, close-up magic during a wedding reception followed by a short comedy magic show later in the evening.

The important thing isn't choosing the biggest show.

It's choosing the right entertainment for your event.

What If My Event Isn't a Wedding or Corporate Function?

Paul Roberts standing up at The Magic Bar Live Llandudno

Then you've probably just found one of the reasons to contact me.

I don't believe magic should only be reserved for weddings and corporate events.

I've performed for all kinds of celebrations.

Maybe you're organising something completely unusual.

Maybe it's a family gathering.

Maybe it's a private dinner.

Maybe you're celebrating an anniversary.

Maybe it's a charity event.

Maybe you're putting together a party that doesn't have a name yet.

That's fine.

After more than three decades as a professional magician, I've learned that events don't always fit neatly into boxes.

Tell me what you're planning.

I'll help you work out what could work.

Why Hire a Professional Magician Instead of a Friend Who Knows a Few Tricks?

Professional wedding magician Paul Roberts, providing excellent entertainment

Because there's a huge difference between knowing some magic tricks and being able to perform professionally for a room full of people.

A professional event magician needs more than sleight of hand.

They need timing.

People skills.

Confidence.

Humour.

Audience management.

The ability to read a room.

The ability to adapt.

And perhaps most importantly, the ability to understand when not to perform.

After more than 30 years as a professional magician, I've learned that the magic is only one part of the job.

The rest is making sure your guests have a brilliant time.

My aim isn't simply to impress somebody.

It's to make them smile.

To surprise them.

To involve them.

To give them a story.

And to make sure the person who booked me can relax knowing the entertainment is in safe hands.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hiring a Magician

How much does it cost to hire a magician?

There isn't one price that fits every event.

The cost can depend on the type of performance, number of guests, location, duration and what you would like me to provide.

The easiest way to get an accurate price is to tell me about your event and I'll provide a tailored quote.

far does a magician travel?

I perform throughout the UK and have also performed internationally.

My work has taken me to venues and events across the country and beyond.

So don't assume I'm too far away.

If you're planning something special, ask.

Can a magician perform at a house party?

Absolutely.

Close-up magic is particularly well suited to private homes because it requires very little space and can be performed naturally around the room.

Your guests don't have to sit down and watch a formal show unless that's what you want.

Can magic entertain children and adults together?

Yes.

My style of magic is family-friendly and designed to entertain a broad range of ages.

The key is choosing material and presentation that works for the particular audience.

Does the magician need a stage?

No.

For close-up magic, you don't need a stage at all.

I can perform while guests are standing, sitting, having drinks or enjoying dinner.

For a larger comedy magic show, a suitable performance area can be helpful, but the requirements can be discussed when planning your event.

How far in advance should I book?

As early as possible is always sensible, particularly for popular wedding dates, Christmas parties and weekends.

However, don't assume that a last-minute date is impossible.

It's always worth asking.

The Real Magic Isn't the Trick — It's the Memory

Wrexham Wedding Magician Paul Roberts, delighting newlyweds.

After more than 30 years of performing magic, I've learned that the trick itself isn't always what people remember.

They remember the reaction.

They remember who they were standing with.

They remember the person who screamed when the impossible happened.

They remember their friend insisting that there must be a hidden camera.

They remember their partner choosing the card.

They remember the laughter around the table.

They remember looking at each other and saying:

"Did you see that?"

And that's why I still love performing magic.

Because long after the cards have gone back into the box and I've packed away my props, something else remains.

A memory.

Perhaps it's a memory from a wedding.

Perhaps it's a birthday.

Perhaps it's a corporate dinner.

Perhaps it's a party in somebody's living room.

Perhaps it's a celebration that nobody thought would become particularly memorable.

But then something impossible happens.

People laugh.

People connect.

People experience something together.

And suddenly an ordinary moment becomes a story.

That's the real magic.

Wrexham Corporate Magician Paul Roberts performing close up for delighted guests.

If you're looking for a professional magician for a wedding, party, house party, birthday, corporate event, celebration, dinner, Christmas party, conference, exhibition or special occasion, I'd love to hear what you're planning.

You don't need to know exactly which type of magic you want.

You don't need to understand the different performance options.

And you don't need to have every detail of your event worked out.

Just tell me:

What are you planning?

Where is it taking place?

How many guests are you expecting?

What would you like your guests to experience?

From there, we can work out the best way to bring some magic to your event.

Because ultimately, you're not booking a magician just to fill a space in the timetable.

You're booking an experience.

You're booking laughter.

You're booking astonishment.

You're booking something for your guests to talk about.

And perhaps, years from now, someone will still say:

"Do you remember when that magician did that thing at the party?"

That's a memory worth creating.
